Surf estimateTarline multi-buoy spectral model (buoy-spectrum-shadow-3)
Estimated from measured directional spectra, screened by this beach's exposure. The calculation time is when the model last ran. The observation time is the newest spectrum considered; other inputs may be older. This is not observed breaking surf or an independently calibrated accuracy claim.

One instrument's own reading of open water, selected independently of the water temperature station. The observation time is the oldest of the wave fields shown, so it can overstate a single field's age but never understate it. Read through CDIP, Scripps Institution of Oceanography as 028. The fetch timestamp records the start of a successful poll of this field's provider and product, not response completion or the age of the reading.

Modeled hourly weather for this beach's coordinates, not a reading from an instrument at the beach. The upstream model issue time was not recorded with these data, so issuance is unknown.
SunCalc computes sun and moon rise/set times from the Pacific date and beach coordinates, assuming an unobstructed horizon. Moon phase depends on date and time, not the beach location. No feed or beach sensor is involved; terrain and atmospheric conditions affect visible rise/set times.
All times are Pacific. An upstream issue time is shown only when recorded. A feed response time is not the provider's model initialization or publication time. Unlisted timestamps were not recorded or do not apply.
Estimated breaking-face height at the beach is separate from offshore buoy wave height. These estimates are not validated measurements.

Surf is an unvalidated breaking-wave estimate; offshore wave height is not surf height. Each height carries the period of its own source: the Surf period comes from the sample the breaking estimate was computed from, the Offshore swell period from the wave model's own row. A period shown as – is one the source did not supply. No calibrated accuracy percentage is available. Wind is the atmospheric weather forecast, not wind-wave direction.

No exact beach-reported face heights in the latest reports. Hovering an estimated-face point states the period of the sample that height was modeled from. The report form does not collect a wave period, so a crowd report's height says the period was not reported rather than borrowing the forecast's.

Tarline splits this station's own directional wave spectrum into a swell part and a wind sea part.
The split is this site's computation, not a provider product, and it is deliberately conservative:
two parts, not a list of named swell trains. Variances add and heights do not, so the combined
figure below is 4 times the square root of the total variance rather than a sum of the partition
heights.

What the multi-buoy model is
The surf figure on this page is computed from several buoys' directional wave spectra, with the land
between each buoy and this beach screened out. It is a model ESTIMATE and it has not been calibrated
against measured breaking surf, so no accuracy figure is claimed for it. The baseline beside it is the
height the older exposure/CDIP tier produced at the same run, kept so the change stays auditable. A
difference between the two is two models disagreeing, not either one being right.
Multi-buoy model, this beach's estimate 2.9 ft
Legacy baseline, same run 5.4 ftmop
Difference from the baseline -2.5 ft this beach's estimate minus the older tier at that run
Stations used: Topanga Nearshore, Santa Monica Bay, Santa Monica Basin, Santa Cruz Basin, San Pedro, Long Beach Channel, San Pedro South, East Santa Barbara
exposure: curated arcs at every frequency, plus a known-land screen on bins at or above 0.09 Hz

IncidentNewsSatellite Imagery Anomaly; off Malibu, CA23.5 km away
The morning of 06-AUG-2024, NOAA NESDIS issued a Marine Pollution Surveillance Report (MPSR) for possible oil identified by satellite imagery just offshore of Malibu, CA. Imagery was collected at 06-AUG 0150 UTC (05-AUG 1850 hrs Pacific) from a Sentinel 1A (synthetic aperture radar) satellite. USCG and Malibu lifeguards investigated. USCG helicopter overflight was delayed due to marine layer conditions. Vessels on water observed no oil, but helo observed some material in the water. Upon closer inspection by surface vessels, no oil was observed and all units returned to base.
IncidentNewsTank Truck Jet Fuel Spill; Point Mugu, CA17.1 km away
On Friday morning, November 18, 2016, a mobile tank truck overturned near the entrance to the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and released approximately 1,500 gallons of JP8 jet fuel onto the pavement and into a nearby creek.
IncidentNewsRe-fueling plane crash; Point Mugu NAS, CA21.3 km away
At approximately 1700hrs on 18MAY2011 a Boeing 707 military refueling airplane crashed at the end of the runway at Naval Air Station Point Mugu. All crewmembers survived and the aircraft burned for a number of hours. Initial reports indicated that none of the approx 25,000 gallons of JP-8 jet fuel on-board had reached the Ocean. The next morning it became apparent that some of the JP-8 had entered the marsh area adjacent to the crash site and at 0830hrs on 19MAY2011 product was observed in the tidal channel under L Avenue (approx 1/3 mile from crash site). Navy Region Southwest and USCG MSD Santa Barbara contacted the NOAA SSC to request information on oil persistence in the marsh complex and trajectory support.
IncidentNewsF/V Buccaneer; Point Mugu, CA18.6 km away
On January 4, 2006, the F/V Buccaneer sank in 1200 feet of water 2.5 miles off Point Mugu, CA, near Port Hueneme, CA. The 68-foot steel-hulled squid fishing vessel was carrying approximately 1000 gallons of diesel. Sheening was observed when the vessel sank but currently is no visible sheen.
